Screencasting

Screencasting is simply recording whatever is happening on your computer screen. A screencast can also include audio. If you want a downloadable (free) screencasting tool, visit Jing. If you want to get started by using a free online tool, use screencast-o-matic.

Which to use? . Jing is probably the easiest in terms of selecting the actual area of the screen that you want to record. However, it is limited to 5 minutes. If you really get into screencasting, you may want to purchase Camtasia (PC only, but awesome!) or SnapZPro (Mac).

If you need to, you can host video with YouTube, TeacherTube, Vimeo, or Viddler.

If you plan on screencasting a lecture, you might want to check out the "good presentation" resource.

Challenge

Play around with the different screencasting tools. Get used to working with them. Create a screencast and embed it on your blog.

Does uploading a screencast made through Jing usually take a long time? I made a screencast with audio of a map on Google Earth and am trying to upload it into my blog site. However, it has been uploading for over 30 minutes and says I can continue to edit but to not close out or publish the blog yet...Anybody have any thoughts? The video should only be about 45-60 seconds...I am going to give up on it now and try again tomorrow.
Thanks
Shannon

Shannon,
I uploaded mine from Jing directly to screencast.com and it took seconds. I then just linked to the screencast in my blog and it worked very nice.

I've been trying to get audio on my screencast; I'm not sure what to do because I don't want to embed an unfinished product. Uploading doesn't seem to be a problem, but then when I do, there's no sound at all. HELP!

@Heather, do you have audio before you upload? You've checked the built in mic on your computer and checked audio levels and all that? Not sure if I can help if it's more complicated than that. If you send a link of your Jing instead of uploading or embedding (under the Share button, the thing that looks like an alien plant), does the audio work then?

Thanks, Scott--I've done a sound test and it seems to have audio through the mic; I've made sure the volume is turned up; I've also checked to make sure nothing is muted; it's usually a simple problem, I agree--I'll let you know what I find--thanks so much! Oh, and ANY and ALL suggestions are welcome! Happy 4th!

@Heather, I had the same problem after working with Jing. I'm not sure how I fixed it. Among other things I finally shut the whole thing down [went to buy a bottle of wine] when I powered back up I played with the pg up/pg down buttons and I have audio back.
